At the end of the summer term FutureMe staff welcomed Year 8 students from 7 North East schools to our series of Developing FutureMe@ days, hosted at both Durham University and Northumbria University. Students were invited to compliment and celebrate their involvement in our Year 8 tutoring programme.
The events were made up of three workshop sessions, aiming to help students improve upon or acquire skills relating to mind-mapping, communication as well as providing them with a basic understanding of different higher education routes through the use of a quiz. For lots of students, this was their first experience of a university campus, as well as their first university style lecture.
During the day, students participated in brilliant sessions provided by Talk the Talk and MADE Training, as well as a session delivered by our own FutureMe associates. All sessions gave students lots of opportunities to learn new information and gain new skills.
MADE Training ran a mind mapping session with our students, the aim of this session was to increase their knowledge of mind mapping techniques and how to use them during their studies. Students told us that the session was ‘fun’ and ‘really well explained’, and almost all students said they would use the skills they developed in the session in future!
Talk the Talk’s workshop, ‘Talk about Communication’, was designed to help students improve their communication skills. Speaking in groups can be daunting, but all students gave 100% and their hard work really paid off. Their teachers told us they saw students grow in confidence during the session.
After a busy day students took part in a de-brief session led by FutureMe staff before departing campus and returning to school. We hope all students had a great day!
